All username and passwords are assigned to individual users and should not be shared with others. Users will be held responsible for any misuse of their ECC account. To protect your account, the College Information Technology Services department suggests the following:
• Always Log Off from your computer when you are completed with your session, or when you leave your seat. • Select a password which is easy to remember, but difficult for someone to guess or figure out. An alphanumeric password (one consisting of letters and numbers) is highly recommended. • Never write down your password, display it on the monitor or print it out on any document. • Change your password at least once a month. To change your password, hold down ctrl-alt-del simultaneously after logging on to the computer. Then click on “Change Password” and enter your old password. Then enter your new password, enter it a second time to confirm it, and click “OK” | User Accounts |
| |
1) Open up your Internet browser (Internet Explorer is highly recommended for accessing ECC’s Webmail system). 2) In the Address bar type in https://webmail.ecc.edu and hit the enter key
3) In the username and password dialogue box, type in your username and password. Your username is the first six letters of your last name, the first letter of your first name and your two digit day of birth (If the last name is shorter than 6 characters, the entire last name is used). Your default password is the last 4 digits of your social security number followed by the last two digits of your birth year.
4) Click OK, you will then be logged into ECC’s Webmail system where you can read or send e-mail messages. | Email/Webmail |
| | Your E-mail address is your username, followed by @ecc.edu. Access to College E-mail is available for students on the web at https://webmail.ecc.edu from any computer connected to the Internet. | Email/Webmail |
| |
Access to electronic mail (E-mail) is a privilege and designed to assist users in the acquisition of knowledge and in the efficient communication with others. All ECC accounts have the capability to use E-mail for internal and external use. While Erie Community College does not prohibit the use of E-mail for personal reasons, users should be aware that the primary intent of providing e-mail service is to support the educational mission of the college and to conduct its daily business.
It is the user’s responsibility to protect their E-mail address from unsolicited senders. Users should take precautionary measures to ensure the security of their E-mail account by only giving out their address to individuals or mailing lists they wish to receive E-mail from and being cautious about using their E-mail address on the Internet or posting it on a Web page. Erie Community College cannot protect individuals from receipt of materials which may be offensive to them. While confidentiality cannot be ensured, E-mail is considered private and confidential, except as noted in ECC’s Acceptable Use Policy. | Email/Webmail |

The ECC Wireless Network offers the same resources to students as any computer on campus. To access the ECC Wireless Network students are required to have an ECC User Account which is explained in section II of this document. All Wireless Access requires Virtual Private Network (VPN) software to better secure and encrypt all information that is sent across the Wireless Network. | Wireless Network |
| | ECC also offers wireless Internet access to students who have there own laptops with wireless capabilities. Recommended requirements are Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or Mac OS 10.2 or above. The ECC wireless network supports 802.11b and 802.11g bands. To access the wireless network open up your web browser and you will be redirected to the ECC wireless network welcome screen. ECC requires that you have a VPN connection to the network in order to use the Internet. On the welcome page there is information and links on how to download and install the VPN Client on your laptop for both the Windows and Macintosh operating systems. If you do not install the VPN client your access to the network is limited to the welcome screen. | Wireless Network |
| |
Wireless laptops are available at each campus library for student use. These laptops can be signed out and used within the library for students to do course work. All resources are available such as the U: drive, printer access, e-mail and Internet. For use of library laptops, see the reference desk in the library on your campus. | Wireless Network |
| | | Library Resources |
| |
The ECC Library Resource Centers offer a number of resources to students both on and off campus at all times of the day. You can access the library’s online catalog, full-text articles, research databases, citation guides, internet search engines and more.
The ECC Library Catalog lets you check your account; renew books online and place holds on library materials. You can also ask questions, by using the library’s online Reference/Suggestion Form.
Visit your electronic doorway to information at: http://elinks.ecc.edu/library/
Note: When you search certain databases you will be asked for log on information. Enter your standard ECC username & password. This verifies you as an authorized user and you can proceed with your research. | Library Resources |
| | As technology progresses it is inevitable that legacy devices will be replaced by newer and efficient devices. This trend is evident by the computer manufacturers slowly phasing out 3.5” floppy disk drives. These legacy floppy disk drives are being replaced by portable flash memory drives, sometimes referred to as flash, thumb or USB drives. The flash drive is a small keychain size device which connects to your computer via the USB port and acts as a small hard drive. | Flash Drives |
| | Erie Community College has not yet phased out the 3.5” floppy drives from our lab computers. However, we highly recommend that students use a flash drive instead of a floppy disk drive. Floppy disks are easily susceptible to damage from both improper storage and constant use. Our department has witnessed many students losing there work as a result of a corrupted floppy disk. | Flash Drives |
| | USB flash drives are more reliable and are able to store more data than a floppy disk drive. These drives come in many sizes, depending on their use and are available in many stores and online at many popular Web sites. ECC recommends that these devices should replace the floppy disk when transferring coursework between multiple computers. | Flash Drives |
